Problem Note 42805: PROC MIXED incorrectly produces predicted values as 0 for certain situations

DetailsHotfixAboutRate It

PROC MIXED might produce incorrect predicted values as 0 for a new subject in the input dataset. The following must be true for this problem to occur:

  • There is a REPEATED statement with the SUBJECT= option, and
  • There is an OUTP= option on the MODEL statement, and
  • At least one subject has all missing repsonses and a new fixed effect class level that does not occur in another subject that has at least one non-missing response.
  • For example, suppose the data contains a treatment effect TRT. TRT has 2 levels observed in the input dataset, A and B. However, there exists at least one subject on which no dependent variable data was collected. The observations for the dependent variable on this subject have all missing values. This subject also has a new level of TRT, C. With a REPEATED statement and the OUTP= option on the model statement, then this and other subjects in the data that have all missing values for the dependent variable might have predictions set to 0 in the OUTP= dataset.

To circumvent the problem, delete those observations that have both missng response and a new level of fixed effect.
